Fields marked * are required. Use the same spelling every time (for example always “facebook”, never “Facebook” and “fb”), or Analytics will split your data into separate rows.

What is a UTM Link Builder?

A UTM link builder is a tool that adds tracking tags to a web address so you can see exactly where your visitors come from in Google Analytics.

UTM stands for “Urchin Tracking Module” (a name left over from the company Google bought to create Analytics). The tags are short bits of text added to the end of a URL:

https://yoursite.com/best-ai-tools?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=september-post

When someone clicks that link, Analytics reads the tags and records the visit under those labels. The main ones are:

  • utm_source: where the click came from (facebook, newsletter, youtube)
  • utm_medium: the type of channel (social, email, cpc)
  • utm_campaign: the specific campaign or post (september-post, black-friday)
  • utm_term and utm_content (optional): the keyword or which version of a link or ad was clicked

The builder is the form that assembles this for you. You type in the page URL, source, medium, and campaign, and it produces the finished link, so you don’t have to remember the format or risk typos, which would split your data into separate rows.

This matters because untagged clicks from places like WhatsApp, some social apps, and email often get lumped into “Direct” traffic in Analytics, which hides where your visitors actually came from. Tagged links let you see which posts, platforms, or campaigns are bringing people in, and they’re especially useful when you share links yourself in many places.
